제주 요석원
제주도의 중산간지역(제주 해발의 중간)에 위치하는 대지는 휘어진 개천과 지역의 독특한 대지분할과 신-구도로의 중첩으로 인해 특이한 삼각형으로 형성되어 건물의 디자인에 큰 영향을 줄 수 밖에 없다. 산과 바다가 트여 있는 개방된 공간성을 조그만 삼각형 대지경계에 이끌려 삼각건물로 훼손하고 싶지 않았다. 또한 건축주로부터 의뢰 받은 수많은 프로그램이 주변의 컨텍스트에 반하는 스케일로 읽히지 않도록 계획 방향을 잡았다.
Jeju Yosukwon
A unique terrain division and a curved stream along with the overlapping old and new roads on the site contribute to the formation of a triangular building site in the mid mountain area of Jeju Island. This inevitably poses a challenge to an architect in a sense that it could take away the freedom of choosing the shape of the architectural design he or she pursues. In addition, such unique architectural conditions coupled with too much of an ambition to envision all the program requests by the client could easily ruin the openness and liberty felt through the grandeur of adjacent mountains and the vast sea in front by simply conforming to the land shape and burdening the area with too many design elements, eventually disrupting the surroundings. Therefore, design efforts should be put forth in a way that does not conflict with the surrounding context while keeping alive creativity with the overall architectural shape.

매스 디자인
분리와 균형 그리고 통일성 : 각 매스는 기능의 독립적 활용성을 바탕으로 대지가 면하고 있는 각각의 주변환경에 대응하여 계획되어졌다. 형태적 독립성은 분리된 매스의 볼륨과 더불어 주변 컨텍스트에 과하지 않는 크기들로 인식하게 한다. 분리된 매스는 강한 형태적 연결고리와 입면계획을 통해 전체적인 통일성을 이루어내었다.
Mass design
Separation, Balance and Unity: While maintaining as much independent practicality on its own, each mass has been designed to best harmonize with the surroundings. The size of each mass is just perfectly balanced that each mass is seen as part of the surrounding context. All the separated masses achieve a sense of unity through solid structural links and elevation plans.
성격을 달리하는 여러 프로그램은 공적, 사적 영역분리와 프로그램간 연계성을 고려하여 세 개의 매스에 분할하여 담았다. 대공간이 필요한 프로그램인 상업시설은 운영 성격에 맞게 분리하여 전면도로에 면해 배치했다. 자연스럽게 후면에 사적영역을 담는 매스가 배치 되어진다. 매스간 틈은 정원과 마당으로 계획하여 각 매스의 시작적, 동적 연결성을 제어하도록 했다.
Various programs requests are embodied into three different types of masses: commercial, residence, and gardens. Commercial masses are placed on the road to gain the most comprehensive exposure and easy access for visitors. Where the commercial masses end, gardens continue until a residence mass takes over. This setting provides a clear division between commercial and residence masses while giving a seamless connectivity through gardens.
정원공간
정원은 크게 공적공간으로의 <중정>과 <천변>, 사적공간으로의 <후정> 크게 세 곳으로 구분되어 계획되었다. 중정내 작은 개울의 흐름은 두 상업시설 영역의 분리와 더불어 사적영역을 분리시키는 역할을 한다. 주변의 자연환경을 오로지 방문객만 누리는 아쉬움을 없애고자 건축주를 위한 비밀정원(후정)을 별도로 계획했다. 측정은 건천의 흐름과 측면 매스 사이에 위치하여 선형적 형상을 가진다.
Garden space
The gardens incorporate a private space into a public space by creating a in addition to a and a . This is to go against the tendency that commercial heavy areas often neglect the addition of private areas. This translates to the installation of a courtyard and a small stream for public and a backyard and a garden house for private. A side yard forms a linear shape, placed right next to the flank of a commercial mass.
사진1 중정 : 수변과 소나무는 매스와 함께 경관을 만들어 낸다. 사진2 후정 : 계단과 개울을 지나 만나는 후정은 사랑방 역할을 하는 정자와 함께 건축주만의 공간이 된다. 사진3 측정 : 대지밖의 건천과 건물 사이의 정원은 레스토랑의 야외공간으로 계획 되었다.
Picture 1 Court Yard : Pine trees decorating the edge of a small stream become a great landscape photo. Picture 2 Back Yard : A back yard and a garden house appear after walking past a staircase and a small stream, which satisfies the need for tranquility of the client. Picture 3 Side Yard : Adjacent to a dry stream outside the building site, a side yard forms on one side and serves as a both functional and aesthetically pleasing outdoor area for a restaurant, becoming more than a mere secondary pathway leading to the back yard.
파사드
멀티파사드 : 개방된 주변과의 관계성을 기반으로 계획되어진 매스들은 주변도로에서 보는 시점에 따라 다양한 조합형태를 보이게 된다. 매스들은 독립적 완결성 보다는 통일성이 강조되도록 건물의 방향성에 따른 재료와 창이 선택적으로 사용되어졌다.
열림과 닫힘 : 공간의 용도와 위치별로 극단적인 닫음과 열림으로 매스간 프라이버시 간섭을 최소화 한다. 주변의 경관과 일조를 고려한 결과이다.
Facade
Multi-façade : Seamlessly merged with the surrounding open space, masses appear different from various angles. Construction materials and window sizes are carefully picked to achieve unity from each angle.
Open & Close : To minimize privacy infringement, masses take either a completely open structure or a nearly closed one. In such decision-making, sceneries and the amount of sunshine are considered.
사진1 : 주거동은 중정 방향으로 최소의 창을 계획하여 상업공간과 주거공간의 시선충돌을 피했다. 여백의 공간에 소나무가 강조된 경관을 만든다. 사진2: 각 매스의 독립적 완결성 보다는 매스간 통일성을 강조하도록 모든 매스 전면에는 민무늬노출콘크리트를, 좌우측면에는 나무무늬 노출콘크리트를 사용했다. 사진3 : 건물외부의 천정과 바닥에는 목재가 사용되어졌다. 무채색 콘크리트와 유리가 주를 이루는 입면에 따뜻함이 비치도록 하여 건물의 정체성을 이룬다.
Picture 1: Minimum number and size of windows are in place on the residence mass to avoid unpleasant eye contacts between commercial and residence areas. The remaining area on the wall excluding small sized windows becomes a great canvas for a tall pine tree. Picture 2 : In order to emphasize the unity of the masses rather than the independent perfection of each mass, all masses are finished with exposed-flat concrete in front and exposed-wood pattern on sides. Picture 3 : Woods are used to floors and ceilings outdoor. The true color of masses is the warmth felt through achromatic concrete and glasses.
실내공간 Inside Space
4층 주거공간 : 부부의 간소한 삶을 담도록 L+D+K 형태의 거실을 가지는 공간으로 계획했다. 거실의 넓은 창으로 멀리 한라산을 담는 액자가 된다.
Residence, 4th Floor : An L+D+K style living room implies a simple life style of the client couple. The immense window in the living room serves as a frame that captures Mt. Halla.
3층 주거공간 : 게스트가 묵는 두 개의 공간으로 계획 되어져 있다.
Residence 3rd Floor : There are two households space on the 3rd floor for visiting guests.
정자 : 후정의 정자는 작은 연못 위에 부유하고 있다. 명상과 만남을 위한 건축주 개인의 공간이다.
Pavilion : The pavilion was planned on a small pond in a cozy back yard. This space is the client’s personal space for meditation and meeting.
상업공간. I : 레스토랑이 되기로 한 좌측 매스는 세 개의 섹션구성으로 영업의 다양성을 부여하고 높은 천정고와 창호의 개방감을 통해 부지 옆의 천변과 정원이 하나되는 공간으로 계획했다.
Commercial. I : The commercial mass on the left is to become a restaurant and consist of three sections for diversity. In addition, a high ceiling and large windows blur distinction between inside and outside of the mass to naturally merge with gardens and a stream.
상업공간. II : 멀리 한라산과 바다 경관을 동시에 감상할 수 있는 카페공간이다. 2층의 외부 연결다리를 통해 야외의 건축산책로를 거닐며 주변을 감상할 수 있다.
Commercial. II : This mass is a café space where you can enjoy the view of both Mt. Halla and the ocean. On the second floor, visitors can take a short walk along the trail on the bridge that connects masses.
